What Your Cravings May Be Telling You (And Why Your Body Is Not Working Against You)
Cravings are often misunderstood.
They are usually seen as a lack of discipline or something to resist. But in reality, cravings are often your body communicating with you.
When you learn how to listen to them, they can offer valuable insight into your stress levels, hormones, blood sugar, nutrient status and overall wellbeing.
As a Women’s Health Naturopath, I see cravings not as the problem, but as a message. Your body is always speaking, often whispering long before symptoms become louder and harder to ignore.
Cravings are not random
Your body is constantly working to maintain balance. When something is out of alignment, it often signals this through appetite changes and cravings.
This does not mean every craving has one single cause. But patterns can tell us a lot.
Here are some of the most common cravings and what they may be linked with.
Chocolate cravings
Chocolate cravings are often linked with magnesium demand.
Magnesium is essential for:
Nervous system regulation
Stress resilience
Muscle relaxation
Mood balance
Sleep quality
When stress is high, magnesium is used more rapidly by the body.
This is why chocolate cravings are often more noticeable during:
Stressful periods
The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle
Times of burnout or poor sleep
Sometimes, it is not just chocolate you are craving, but calm, rest, and nervous system support.
Salt cravings
Strong salt cravings can sometimes reflect that your body is under higher stress load.
Salt plays an important role in:
Hydration and fluid balance
Blood pressure regulation
Nervous system signalling
Cravings for salty foods may show up when:
You are under chronic stress
You are feeling fatigued or depleted
Sleep is disrupted
Cortisol and stress hormones are more dominant
Often, this is less about salt itself and more about your body asking for support, grounding, and recovery.
Sugar cravings
Sugar cravings are commonly linked to blood sugar instability.
When blood sugar drops, the body looks for a quick source of energy.
This can be influenced by:
Skipping meals or long gaps between eating
Low protein or low fat intake
High caffeine consumption
Stress and cortisol fluctuations
Sugar can provide a fast energy boost, but it is usually followed by a crash, continuing the cycle.
Sugar cravings at night in particular are often a sign that you have not eaten enough during the day, or that your meals have not been balanced enough to sustain your energy and blood sugar levels.
Craving leafy greens
Craving fresh, bitter, or leafy foods can sometimes reflect a need for liver and digestive support.
The liver plays a key role in:
Hormone metabolism
Detoxification pathways
Blood sugar regulation
Energy balance
When the body is processing higher levels of stress, hormones, or environmental load, it may express this through a preference for:
Leafy greens
Fresh salads
Bitter vegetables
This can be the body’s way of asking for lightness and internal support.
What your cravings are really asking for
Behind most cravings is not just food, but a deeper need such as:
Stable blood sugar
Nervous system regulation
Rest and recovery
Nutrient replenishment
Hormonal balance
When you start to interpret cravings this way, they become less confusing and more informative.
Your body whispers before it gets loud
Cravings are often one of the earliest signs that something needs attention.
They are not something to suppress or feel guilty about. They are feedback.
When ignored long term, these signals can sometimes progress into fatigue, mood changes, hormonal imbalance or burnout.
The goal is not perfection. It is awareness.
A naturopathic approach
A naturopathic approach looks beyond symptom control and asks:
What is your body trying to communicate?
What patterns are driving these cravings?
Where are your foundations being stretched?
How can we support long-term balance?
Support may include:
Blood sugar regulation through food and meal timing
Nutrient status (magnesium, iron, B vitamins, zinc)
Stress and nervous system support
Gut and liver health
Hormone balance
You do not have to override your body
If you are constantly battling cravings, it is not a willpower issue.
It is often a sign your body is asking for more support.
As a Women’s Health Naturopath, I help women understand these signals, uncover what is driving them, and support the foundations so they can feel more balanced, energised and in tune with their bodies again.
